Material Spotlight | The Treadwell on America ByDesign
As featured in Season 4 of “America ByDesign”, Adam Rolston, founding principal of INC Architecture, shines a spotlight on the materiality behind The Treadwell Condos lobby — including our Barnes Original Limestone. We’re honored by Adam’s kind words and proud to see ABC Stone’s work celebrated on a national stage. Collaborations like these remind us why we love what we do, and we look forward to bringing timeless natural stone into many more visionary projects ahead.

ABC Stone announces the opening of “Stone in Landscape Architecture: A Sensory Journey,” an exhibition that explores the powerful relationship between stone and the design of outdoor spaces. This immersive exhibition brings together the creative vision of five acclaimed landscape architecture firms: LaGuardia Design Group, Oehme van Sweden, Design Workshop, Supermass Studio, and RKLA. This panel discussion, moderated by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) NY chapter past president, Elizabeth Moskalenko, features the landscape architects whose designs are on view, and delves into the evolving role of stone in landscape architecture and how their design thinking was shaped by having unlimited use of the material.
WANDER | An immersive sculpture exhibition
ABC Stone, in partnership with the New York Academy of Art, is proud to announce the eleventh annual sculpture exhibition in celebration of The Carrara Merit Residency Scholarship. WANDER will be presented from May 7th through September 4, 2024. Through more than two dozen works from 17 artists, the selling exhibition will explore the comprehensive and far-reaching ways humans seek and wander. From the physical necessities intended to protect us from environmental and worldly threats to the barriers we activate to keep from feeling sorrow, pain, and even joy, WANDER examines the various accouterments, plot twists, and new destinations that emerge when we forego well-worn paths in favor of taking risks and opting into the richness of the unknown. WANDER provides a necessary and ongoing platform for the amplification of a culturally and ethnically diverse group of artists that reflects the world through their distinct lenses. As in previous years, the works on view were augmented by performance art, music, and interactive video elements during our May 7th opening reception.

Equanimity in America
Engineer Steve Webb and stonemason Pierre Bidaud share their research in making stone serve contemporary structural construction needs and discuss its potential to substantially reduce embodied energy in built form. They challenge the perception of stone as a heritage or luxury material, arguing for its possibility to play a large role in decarbonization.
Their presentation is followed by a discussion with Jonah Wurzer-Kinsler, a partner at Franken-Schotter GmbH & Co, Germany’s largest producer of limestone and an environmental leader in the stone industry.
The discussion, moderated by structural engineer Nat Oppenheimer, touches on questions of circularity, affordability, and scalability, including recycling stone from existing buildings, the use of stone in affordable housing, and sustainable quarrying practices.

Sculpture Show in Sag Harbor on 8.19.21
On the evening of August 19th, ABC Stone, in partnership with the New York Academy of Art and curator Peter Drake, hosted the tenth annual sculpture exhibition in celebration of The Carrara Merit Residency Scholarship. The exhibition featured 25 sculptures from 16 artists and provided a necessary and ongoing platform for the amplification of a culturally and ethnically diverse group of artists which reflects the world through their distinct lenses.
Guests were invited to wander through a lush, six-acre property in the heart of Sag Harbor that had been transformed into an other-worldly, sculpture-infused labyrinth. The pieces were grouped thematically and curated into separate vignettes as a comment on society and the state of our world today.
As in previous years, the works on view were augmented by performance art, music, and interactive video elements.
In continuing the exhibition series and the Carrara Residency program, ABC aims to honor its ongoing commitment to promoting and sustaining the use of stone in artistic practice and play a role in the continuance of this millennia-old art form. Now in its 11th year, the Carrara Residency Merit Scholarship is among the most popular Residencies and garners the most diverse pool of applicants among the MFA students at the New York Academy of Art. The honorees are selected by a group of architects, designers, artists, and magazine editors who meet with and interview each applicant in person.

In total, 4,000 stone panels were employed to construct the facility, which was designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects (TWBTA) with engineering work facilitated by PICCO Engineering. Join us for an insider’s look into the challenges, innovative solutions, and unending dedication that were necessary for the talented teams whose work made this architectural feat possible.
