Formality and Informality: Lecture with Landscape Designer Arne Maynard

September 19, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) is pleased to announce a lecture with landscape designer Arne Maynard co-hosted by Architectural Digest.

Arne Maynard designs gardens that play with the balance between formality and informality. It is the combination of these two principles that yields gardens full of romantic, atmospheric, and informal planting, and which have a longevity that comes from the enduring strength of a formal structure.

In this exclusive lecture for the ICAA, Arne will talk through a selection of his mature projects, showing how the layers of formality and informality play their roles in his designs. The formal layout, defined by elements such as paths, hedges, trees, and topiary, form the bones of the garden that endure throughout the year. These are juxtaposed with plants that are encouraged, in their moment of exuberance, to truly inhabit the spaces. In Arne Maynard’s gardens, roses tumble through trees and spill over walls, above meadows and borders that are celebrations of the seasons, temporarily dissolving the perennial formality of the structure beneath.

Arne Maynard is an international garden designer with a portfolio of high profile clients. He is an RHS Gold Medal and Best in Show winning designer, and is hailed by his profession as one of the most important garden designers working today. Central to Arne Maynard’s work as a garden designer is his ability to identify and draw out the essence of a place, something that gives his gardens a particular quality of harmony and belonging. Attention to detail, both in the planting and the structure of the garden, is paramount in Arne’s designs, which draw on a wide range of references, from architecture to garden history, and from interior design to often long-forgotten traditional crafts and techniques.

Arne’s latest book, The Gardens of Arne Maynard, published by Merrell, is available to purchase now from book shops or online.
