Steven Holl Architects’ Moscow “Parachute Hybrids”

Art collective Kamen have, in collaboration with our friends at Steven Holl Architects, released plans for a playful, unorthodox mixed-use for the Tushino district in Moscow. Featuring massive circles cut into the facades and topped with green roofs, the asymmetrical glass buildings won an international design competition, besting, among others, Zaha Hadid Architects. The project draws inspiration from the location’s history: it was formerly a paratrooper airfield; the architects call the buildings “Parachute Hybrids.” The complex of buildings will comprise housing, social spaces, an elementary school, a large public garden and playground space; the design is sustainable, with green roofs, solar pergolas, rainwater recycling, and geothermal heating/cooling.
