ABC Stone Receives 2017 Pinnacle Award from the Natural Stone InstituteABC Stone is pleased to announce that we have received a 2017 Pinnacle Award of Excellence from the Natural Stone Institute. A prestigious jury of A+D and natural stone professionals has selected our Perry World House project, from among dozens of entries received last year.
The Pinnacle Awards are given each year by the Natural Stone Institute (formerly known as the Marble Institute of America and the Building Stone Institute, or MIA+BSI) to projects whose beauty, creativity, ingenuity, and craftsmanship exemplify professional mastery in the use of natural stone in commercial and residential applications.
Perry World House, designed by 1100 Architect, is the University of Pennsylvania’s hub for global engagement. The new space allows affiliates from each of the University’s twelve schools to address international affairs in a cross-disciplinary way.
The 17,400-square-foot building combines a historic house built in 1851 with a new limestone-clad structure. A portion of the original house was salvaged and reconstructed, as per historic documentation. In addition to the project’s adaptive reuse, the Perry World House is on track to achieve LEED Silver certification.
Renaissance Beige limestone, vein-cut with a honed finish, was selected for the façade and roofline; the same material, cross-cut with a honed finish, for the interior walls and floors.
The natural linear grain of the stone provided unique visual interest that was incorporated into the final design, and ABC Stone made several trips to the Renaissance Beige quarry in Germany to hand-pick the material, ensuring consistency of selection.
The National Stone Institute, is a trade association which represents every aspect of the natural stone industry and offers a wide array of technical and training resources, professional development opportunities, regulatory advocacy, and networking events, for stone industry professionals.
The Pinnacle Awards Jury for 2017 included Richard Bertman, FAIA, LEED AP of CBT Architects, David Hacin, FAIA of Hacin + Associates, and Craig Copeland, AIA, LEED AP BD+C of Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, among others.
In other exciting news, ABC’s own Don McGee was honored with the 2017 Speaker of the Year award through the Natural Stone Institute’s CEU Program, having throughout the year given 39 CEU classes, and educated 454 architects and designers.
