Italy’s Corsanini Studios Comes to Vermont’s Carving Studio

WEST RUTLAND — For many, Carrara and marble are synonymous. For those in Carrara, Italy, Vermont marble has its own appeal and history. At the West Rutland Carving Studio & Sculpture Center, Italian Week offers a chance for sculptors to learn about the Italian carving technique and culture.

Leonardo Corsanini and Andrea Ingrassia of the Corsanini Studio in Carrara, Italy, are spending the week in Vermont sharing their knowledge.

“Carrara is the center of production of marble and also the artistic component. If there is a place in the world that also wants to deepen, expand their activity in terms of the artistic practice around marble, I feel a moral responsibility to help in that,” Corsanini said through sculptor Stephen Shaheen, who translated. Shaheen spent time at the Corsanini Studio through a grant and takes groups to Italy.
